Praveen J. Patel, MB, BChir, MA, FRCOphth, MD(Res)
Dr. Patel is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, England where he is the lead consultant for medical retina clinical trials and retinal imaging. He is also the lead clinician for the age-related macular degeneration treatment service at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, which he set up in collaboration with Moorfields.
Dr. Patel specializes in medical retina conditions including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and cataracts. His research areas of interest include improving methods for retinal imaging and improvements in OCT scanning technology for use in diagnoses of neovascular age-related macular degeneration. His current research interests include age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion.
Dr. Patel has published more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles and has conducted extensive research into macular degeneration. Dr. Patel was awarded the Moorfields Research Medal in 2011 for his work as one of the lead investigators for the ABC Trial, the first UK randomized trial of bevacizumab, an anti-VEGF therapy for wet-AMD. The ABC Trial helped establish anti-VEGF treatment protocols for wet-AMD within the National Health Service (NHS).
Dr. Patel is also a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, an international member of Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a member of the Royal Society of Medicine. He received his medical training from Cambridge University and completed his clinical research fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital.
